Many houses, offices and other buildings can carry a negative energy in some or all areas, manifesting as a "cold" or "unsettling" place of discomfort or, in extreme cases, as "ghost" or "poltergeist" activity. This can be a result of severe emotional and psychic stress, which becomes embedded into the fabric of the area. Less often (but occasionally), the area of negativity is caused by the residue of a previous magical working in the area, which was not correctly banished and cleared.
